Clean your House - Build a Church!

Clean your House - Build a Church!*
* the name of the project was inspired by the initiative "Buy a Record - Build a Church" by The Small Town Heroes band. The proceeds from selling their record "Lo, the Hard Times" go to the building fund of St. Alexis Orthodox Church in Lafayette, Indiana.

Not always we can donate as much money for the cause as we would like to. However, everyone has something that has lost its value to us – a movie seen too many times, a present not really used, a game we grew tired of etc, etc… But you can donate these things to our virtual yard sale. The items will be sold (on eBay, craigslist.com etc...) and the revenue will be donated to the Building Fund of the Holy Apostles Orthodox Church.

The project is currently closed, and no items are accepted. However, you are welcome to participate by using the idea, and managing your things yourself. If you wish to clean your house, sell your stuff and donate the proceeds to the building fund, the previous project coordinator, Mariya Petrenko will be happy to share the limited experience gained during this project. Contact information is below.

For a list of items currently on sale (new items added Sunday-Monday of the week) scroll to the bottom of the page. If you want to purchase something, please respond to the listing or contact project coordinator. And remember, no price is too high for any item - 100% of the revenue goes to building a church!

How to participate

1.  Collect the items you wish to donate and contact a project coordinator (listed below, currently - Mariya Petrenko musliba@yahoo.com) to arrange the transfer of things to be sold. It would be appreciated if you could provide description of the things (good/excellent condition, how old, the suggested asking price, may be some details you think would make a buyer prefer your item) or we will do some research and decide what the similar items are worth and suggest a selling price. If you want the profit to be donated as your tax-deductible contribution please remember fill in the donation form to let us know which items you are donating.  Donation in the case of eBay-auctioned piece = selling price – eBay fees.

2.   Sell your items yourself in any way you prefer (see www.craigslist.com for ideas on selling old and used items), and donate the proceeds to Holy Apostles Orthodox Church and make a tax-deductible contribution to the church in your own name.

Some suggestions for donated items

Smaller items in new or ‘like new” condition – think of something people will want to buy and, if necessary, pay for shipment to their home

·  CDs, DVDs, books
·  Collectibles
·  Jewelry
·  Crafts, craft supplies
·  Health and beauty supplies
·  Computer/video/camera supplies
·  Accessories

Note! Furniture, household appliances etc... are a good donation to be sold on Craigslist - local listing. However, because currently the project coordinator has no place to host these large items in her small rented room, please consider helping with pick-up arrangements if you decide to donate something large.

Become a Church Builder!

From 'St John of Shanghai and San Francisco, Zealous Builder of Churches'

Everywhere he went he either oversaw the building of churches or supported the same with his attention and prayers... He wrote about the godly work of building churches:

"In building churches here on earth, we create for ourselves eternal habitations in heaven."

Historic Chapel Restoration

Since 2009 we have been restoring our beautiful chapel, gifted to our parish that year by the Christian Brothers.

To date, we have received and administered grants of approximately $400,000 so far, and continue to apply for the grants as they become available.

Holy Apostles Orthodox Church, in Beltsville, Maryland, is a parish of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia (ROCOR), Eastern American Diocese, founded with the purpose of bringing the Gospel and Divine Services of the Russian Orthodox Church to the people of America in the English language. We invite you to come to any of the Divine Services or events at our mission church. In 2009 we were gifted a beautiful, historic chapel and two-acre campus by the Christian Brothers. Our vision is to establish the parish in its new home, from where the parish can continue to thrive and grow as a living icon of Orthodox missions in America.

St Romanos the Melodist Society

The St. Romanos the Melodist Society produces and publishes English language music of the Russian Orthodox Church.

The St. Romanos website is the online extension of A Church Singer's Companion, a project started in 1998 with the blessing of Metropolitan (then Archbishop) Laurus. Inspired by the Russian Sputnik Psalomshchika, the Companion is envisioned to contain the music necessary for every service a parish choir might need to sing, while staying simple enough so that any parish choir can sing it.

The St. Romanos Society produces music in both printed and recorded formats, and conducts seminars and workshops on the proper performance of that music. The Society is a sodality of Holy Apostles Orthodox Church, Beltsville, Maryland.

To get started looking at music, proceed to the Church Singer's Companion and begin familiarizing yourself with the content. You'll find there are a few more challenging settings mixed in, marked “difficult” or “very difficult”. Audio or video examples accompany some of the music. In addition, the Introduction provides valuable advice about proper church singing and related topics.

Detailed Reviews and Endorsements by clergy and choral professionals are provided for your consideration.
